The temple is dedicated to Raghunath Ji, the imperious deity of Kullu, originally named `Kulantapitha` in the primitive era, meaning “furthest limitation of human tenancy”.The temple was constructed in 1660 A.D. in Himachal Valley with a fusion of Pahari and Pyramidal style of architecture.
The temple was built by Raja Jagat Singh in order to exonerate himself from the guilt of doing injustice to a Brahman, DurgaDutt. As an act of repentance the king donated the entire kingdom to lord Rama and builds a temple to honor the God. The idol of lord Raghunath Temple in Kullu held in the temple is believed to be the same that was used by Lord Rama himself at the time of Ashwamedhyagya and was brought from Tretnath temple of Ayodhya. The Temple holds a significant prominence in the Valley, the puja is offered to the patron deity five times a day; round the year and 45 festivals are held in the honor oftheLord. In the month of October, Kullu becomes the most visited tourist place in himachal due to the Dusshera festival held to celebrate the lordship of the deity.
